“I’ve got India with me.”
The words were spoken calmly by Sharnette Woods, the mother of a missing 13-year-old girl from the Roseland community, who had been missing for almost two weeks. India Woods was missing for 11 days when Sharnette Woods received a text message May 3 from her daughter. The two communicated via text messages throughout the day. Shortly before 7 p.m., the joyful mother was able to speak the words: “I’ve got India with me.”
Sharnette Woods, who had displayed amazing strength throughout the ordeal, broke down and cried. She thanked everyone for the calls e-mails and support she received. In particular, she thanked WVON-AM radio host Roland S. Martin, who first brought the case to public attention April 30. India had disappeared April 22.
A Saturday vigil and flyer distribution effort has been canceled as the Woods family regroups and attends to India’s needs. “We thank God for his strength and protection of our daughter, and we thank the many people in our community who showed so much concern and a willingness to open their hearts and help us. We need some time to be together as a family, but cannot really express our heartfelt appreciation for everyone who came to our aid,” she said.
According to the Center for Missing & Exploited Children, some 800,000 children go missing every year and one-third of those children, about 260,000, are African American children.
