India is back home!

India Woods is back home!
Missing 13-year-old has returned, says happy mom

“I’ve got India with me.”
The words were spoken calmly by Sharnette Woods, the mother of a missing 13-year-old girl from the Roseland community, who had been missing for almost two weeks. India Woods was missing for 11 days when Sharnette Woods received a text message May 3 from her daughter. The two communicated via text messages throughout the day. Shortly before 7 p.m., the joyful mother was able to speak the words: “I’ve got India with me.”

Sharnette Woods, who had displayed amazing strength throughout the ordeal, broke down and cried. She thanked everyone for the calls e-mails and support she received. In particular, she thanked WVON-AM radio host Roland S. Martin, who first brought the case to public attention April 30. India had disappeared April 22.

A Saturday vigil and flyer distribution effort has been canceled as the Woods family regroups and attends to India’s needs. “We thank God for his strength and protection of our daughter, and we thank the many people in our community who showed so much concern and a willingness to open their hearts and help us. We need some time to be together as a family, but cannot really express our heartfelt appreciation for everyone who came to our aid,” she said.

According to the Center for Missing & Exploited Children, some 800,000 children go missing every year and one-third of those children, about 260,000, are African American children.

Prayer vigil Saturday, May 5, for missing girl, please join us

Family, friends and concerned Chicagoans will be joining Sharnette Woods, mother of missing 13-year-old Roseland resident India Woods, May 5 for a brief prayer vigil and then distribute flyers Saturday in efforts to find the African American youngster. India was last seen April 22 and this Sunday would be the second week anniversary of her disappearance.

This gathering hopes to bring attention to India’s plight and distribute information to help bring her back into the loving arms of her mother and family. Volunteers are asked to join the effort and wear white as a sign of the hope we have in bringing India home safely.

According to the Center for Missing & Exploited Children, some 800,000 children go missing every year and one-third of those children, about 260,000, are African American children. “People often wonder what to do in a situation like this, we say come out and help,” said organizers of the vigil and flyer distribution effort.

The vigil will take place Saturday, May 5, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and kick off from 10555 S. Eberhart Avenue, the Woods home. India was last seen by her parents between about 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 6 p.m. at home. She had attended church that day and was spending time between home and a friend’s house just four doors away.

INDIA’S DESCRIPTION: India is a light-skinned Black girl, about 4’11 to 5 ft. tall, weighing about 150 lbs. She was wearing a white shirt and green and white hospital stirrup pants. A photo of India is posted on the web at http://findindiawoods.blogspot.com.

Help find India Woods! Chicago girl missing since April 22, 2007

AMBER ALERT! Chicago girl, 13, is missing!

host of the Roland S. Martin Show WVON-AM Radio
May 1, 2007

I was stunned to learn this morning that an Amber Alert was issued in the case of India Woods, a 13-year-old Chicago girl who has been missing since April 22nd, and we didn't find out until yesterday in an email. It didn't come from the police department but from a family friend.
This morning on WVON, I talked to the girl's mother, Sharnette, who said on that Sunday, India went to church with a friend and came back around 2:30 or 3 p.m. She was in and out of the house, visiting a friend of hers four houses down. The family lived at 105th and Eberhart in the Roseland community.

Sharnette was in the kitchen doing homework and her husband was in the garage. The weather was gorgeous that day and they decided to go down to Navy Pier. That's when they discovered India wasn' there. Her mother said she was wearing a white tank top and green and white hospital stirrups. For information, please call the Chicago Police Department. Sharnette also said she can be called directly or emailed at sharnettewoods@yahoo.com. Her phone number is (773) 418-4189.
